Pete’s back in New York with a cold. He hears about somebody who impersonated Spider-Man and robbed a jewelry store and goes out looking for them. He eventually finds them and finds out that he tried to stop some bank robbers awhile ago and they took a hostage when Spider-Man showed up and they panicked and killed him. The hostage’s sons are pulling this elaborate stunt to try and discredit Spider-Man but then they realize it wasn’t his fault and everything ends up peachy. And then…Joy snaps Peter out of a daydream and apparently he’s on a boat to Ireland. Then as Pete and Joy drive toward Belfast, they see something shocking. But the reader doesn’t get to see.

The Rules of the Game

Spider-Man gets a call from Matt Murdoch who has lost everything. He claims Kingpin found out his secret identity and has ruined his life. Spider-Man goes to talk to Kingpin, but the conversation proves worthless.

Cry of the Wendigo

Spider-Man wakes up in the middle of the night to a blizzard blowing in through the window. He goes out as Spider-Man to clear his head and saves a Canadian diplomat’s little girl after she gets kidnapped.

Spider-Man is just playing possum and jumps out of the way just in time to avoid Hobgoblin’s finger blasters. Hobgoblin escapes. Flash visits Sha Shan in the hospital then gets interviewed by a newswoman and calls Hobgoblin a coward. The Fly escapes from his mental hospital but gets shot down by some guy. Set up for a future story, I suppose. Spider-Man finds Hobgoblin again and they fight until Hobgoblin blows up a furnace. Spider-Man finds him and unmasks him only to find Flash Thompson. But the final panels reveal that the real Hobgoblin framed Flash and is still at large.

Hobgoblin and Rose put more pressure on local thugs as they aspire to take over Kingpin’s grasp on the city. Flash and Sha Shan’s relationship becomes even more strained and Sha Shan leaves after Flash slaps her. Ned Leeds confronts Flash about him seeing Betty and Flash punches him. Peter tells MJ how he became Spider-Man and that he wants to give it up for good because he’s hurt too many people. MJ convinces him to continue being Spider-Man, even though she worries about him being in such danger. Betty asks Joe to stop sending Ned on the undercover assignments that have been keeping them apart and putting a strain on their marriage. Joe doesn’t know anything about such assignments. Hobgoblin wants revenge against Spider-Man and takes Sha Shan hostage at a bus terminal to lure him out. Spider-Man saves Sha Shan, but after fighting awhile, Hobby eventually knocks Spider-Man out.

After an alien fleet of spaceships attacks Beyonder, he wipes them and every trace of their species from existence. Then decides to completely erase the multiverse from existence. He goes to a being called Mephisto who convinces him to take part in a wager. If Mephisto’s champion Spider-Man can hold fast to his fulfillment and morals while under attack of Beyonder’s champion, Zarathos (the living spirit of vengeance), the multiverse will be spared destruction for 24 hours. If not, the multiverse is annihilated. Beyonder sends Zarathos to Earth, where he torments Spider-Man on his way to save Kingpin from an assassination attempt with visions of passed loved ones that he has failed in some way and tries to convince him that all his efforts are worthless and that he should just live for himself. He fights his old foe Green Goblin and fights Zarathos, who calls himself many names like the Ravager of Souls. He takes off Zarathos’s mask and sees Uncle Ben. Spider-Man struggles to maintain his sense of responsibility and knocks Zarathos’s block off. Then he saves Kingpin from being assassinated. Beyonder honors the wager and spares the multiverse from destruction for 24 hours.
