The High Evolutionary wants to purify the human race to prepare for it the next stage of evolution. He wants to capture the Gwen Stacy clone to study it. Also, some gods gave a dozen humans godly powers and are teaching them how to use them. Spider-Man frees the Gwen Stacy clone and High Evolutionary tells him that Professor Miles Warren hadn’t actually perfected cloning. He merely took a person of similar stature and injected them with a genetic virus that changed them into almost identical DNA matches. Spider-Man and Gwen Stacy clone go back to Earth and one of the gods restores Gwen Stacy clone to her original self.

“Sweet Poison!”

Rating: 4/5

Writer: Steve Gerber
Artist: Cynthia Martin

Peter is in Miami promoting his book. His spider sense alarms excruciatingly when the maid enters his hotel room to clean, but nothing out of the ordinary happens and she leaves. Turns out she’s possessed by a powerful being from another dimension. The High Evolutionary sends some minions to kill her and her son (who is also suspected of being a danger). Spider-Man breaks up an interrogation and finds out where a huge stash of cocaine is. It’s out in the Everglades and he finds it, but gets jumped by some other drug dealers and the High Evolutionary’s men. And then also the maid, who’s possessed by some lady named Poison. The Kingpin and Slug are also involved behind the scenes of the drug thing. Spider-Man wins the battle. And Poison leaves the maid’s body, but leaves some of her power.

In a short story about Poison, the maid explains how Poison first came to her when they were both dying, saying if they bonded, they could both live. And now, after Poison has left her body, I guess she’s a crime fighter of sorts. She hunts bad people.

Then a recap of the past year. And more of the High Evolutionary story. He and his animal-men were battling some demon and a lot of them were killed. Some lady named Magda in his fortress has twins, but leaves, and asks him to care for them. The High Evolutionary finds suitable parents in some gypsy village, and the last narration box states that these twins grow up to be Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch.

The Amazing Spider-Man Annual #22 (1988)

“Drug War Rages”

Rating: 4/5

Writer: Tom DeFalco
Artists: Mark Bagley & Mike Esposito

Spider-Man takes down some drug dealers in a warehouse, but gets blamed for murder when a rival drug gang comes in after he leaves and slaughters the bunch. Daredevil and Spider-Man look for the perps, but get misdirected to a bunch of high tech creeps who have plans to make New York sleep. Speedball helps take them down.

There’s an additional story about just Speedball versus some creep who wants to kill his mom.

And another story about the High Evolutionary turning animals into humanoids.
