The Spectacular Spider-Man #147 (1989)

“Inferno: When the Bugle Blows”

Rating: 5/5

Writer: Gerry Conway
Artist: Sal Buscema

Demons start appearing out of nowhere and attacking everybody in the city. These demons have also caused the Empire State Building to grow larger than the World Trade Center and it becomes covered with plant life and gook. One of the demons bites Spider-Man and he winds up in the Daily Bugle fighting demons alongside Jameson and the rest of the Bugle staff. Mary Jane fights demons at the place of her photo shoot. Apparently there’s some kind of protective wall around Manhattan that was put up by the demons. Hobgoblin speaks to the leader of these demons (named N’Astirh) and asks to have the power of a demon in exchange for his soul. N’Astirh grants this wish and Hobgoblin’s eyes and face become demonized.
