The Amazing Spider-Man #289 (1987)

“The Hobgoblin Revealed!”

Rating: 4/5

Writer: Peter David
Artists: Alan Kupperberg & Tom Morgan

Somebody asks Foreigner to kill Hobgoblin. He does. Next scene is the funeral of Ned Leeds. Peter blames himself for it. They were in Berlin at the time working on a story and Ned was murdered. Kingpin’s upset that Foreigner killed Hobgoblin without clearing it with him first. But the Hobgoblin is apparently still alive and kills some of Rose’s men. Kingpin asks Spider-Man to visit and gives Spider-Man a file with evidence that Ned Leeds is Hobgoblin. Kingpin also says the new Hobgoblin is Jason Philip Macendale, who used to be known as Jack O’Lantern. Hobgoblin visits Kingpin, but can’t kill him and runs away. Hobby meets up with Spider-Man and they battle before Spidey falls off a roof onto the street at the feet of Flash. Flash saves Spidey, but nearly dies. Spidey then saves Flash and Flash is cleared of being the Hobgoblin because people on the street saw them both in the same place at the same time.

And apparently, Ned Leeds (as Hobgoblin) hated Spider-Man so much because of the pain he brought Betty.
